**The Records Unit will be closed for university holidays as well as for inclement weather**

Background requests can also be made via fax to 301-314-9377.  The signed release must be accompanied by a fax cover sheet, the investigator’s name and their agency and a return fax number.  Please note that any positive returns must be viewed in person.  Please contact the office at 301-405-5758 to schedule an appointment.

The Records Unit maintains the University of Maryland Police Department and Public Safety records in accordance with our retention schedule, approved by the State Archivist.

Please note that a local name check with UMPD only encompasses incidents that occur within our jurisdiction and is not a fingerprint-supported background check. If you need other information, we suggest you check with other local agencies (municipal police for individual's residence and Prince George's County Police) and the Maryland State Police.
